Seven wild Asiatic elephants were killed and a calf was injured when a high-speed passenger train collided with a herd in Assam, India. The accident occurred early Saturday. The train's driver saw the herd of about 100 elephants and used the emergency brakes, but the train still hit them. Five train coaches and the engine derailed, but no human casualties were reported. The accident site is not a designated elephant corridor, according to Indian Railways. Speeding trains often hit elephants in Assam, which has one of India's highest concentrations of wild Asiatic elephants.
