Since the start of 2023, Nevada has written off more than $106 million in bad debt, money that state officials have determined is impossible or impractical to collect. There were four businesses that owed more than $1 million — two of which had filed for bankruptcy — and four people who owed more than $1 million. The Nevada Independent reports unpaid debts have not disrupted any state programs or services, but Deputy Controller James Smack acknowledges the amount of bad debt reinforces that they need to improve the process. Smack is considering using an AI chatbot to interact with debtors and possibly improve debt collecting.
