The city of San Jose is falling behind on its ambitious climate target of reaching carbon neutrality by 2030. The City Council acknowledged the city is not on track to hit its goal of cutting down carbon emissions. A recent greenhouse gas inventory found emissions actually increased slightly between 2021 and 2023. Councilmember David Cohen says that shows the carbon neutrality goals aren't just going to happen, and that they'll take some work. The city's recent Climate Smart plan notes it has undertaken 40 initiatives to reduce emissions, including generating power using renewable sources and a rebate program to install home heat pumps. The city hasn't met its goal in increasing electric vehicle use.
