South Carolina authorities are investigating a law enforcement shootout that led to the death of a man believed to have fired multiple gunshots at a police officer. The city of Greenville said Sunday that a police officer was repeatedly shot while sitting in his patrol vehicle, but is expected to recover. Greenville County Sheriff Hobart Lewis says his agency's deputies identified a suspect, pursued his vehicle and exchanged gunfire. The county coroner's office says 42-year-old David William Lane sustained “at least one fatal gunshot wound.” The city has asked the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division investigate.
