UC Berkeley’s international student enrollment has grown significantly despite a national decline following a federal immigration crackdown that has deterred some foreign students from studying in the U.S. New international student enrollment increased by 29% this school year, reaching 2,363. This contrasts with a 17% decrease nationwide. UC Berkeley spokesperson Janet Gilmore noted the university's efforts to increase nonresident enrollment to offset a previous dip. Those students pay a higher out-of-state tuition. Californians still make up the majority of the student body, with a record high of 26,670 undergraduates. Berkeley has been building new dorms to help meet housing demands. The University of California system overall has surpassed 300,000 students for the first time.
