Gen. Mamadi Doumbouya has been sworn in as president of Guinea after winning last year's presidential election. He took power in a 2021 military coup and has been accused of clamping down on opposition. The election was held under a new constitution allowing military leaders to run for office. On Saturday, Doumbouya took the oath of office in a stadium in Conakry, the capital. Supporters celebrated, but critics called it a power grab. Despite Guinea's rich mineral resources, half of the population lives in poverty. The government is banking on the Simandou iron ore project to boost the economy.
