Gunmen have attacked a village in western Niger, killing at least 31 people and seriously injuring four others. The attack occurred on Sunday in the commune of Gorouol in the Tillabéri region, according to student organizations. They reported that the victims were executed by unidentified individuals. The region, bordering Mali and Burkina Faso, has been a hotspot for attacks by extremist groups, including an Islamic State affiliate. Despite the Nigerien military government's promise to curb violence since taking power in 2023, attacks have increased. Human Rights Watch noted a rise in attacks against civilians in the area.
