The director of the National Institutes of Health is also taking over as acting head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, according to an administration official. Dr. Jay Bhattacharya will become the third CDC leader during President Donald Trump’s second term, according to the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the appointment hadn’t been made public. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. fired CDC Director Susan Monarez last summer after a vaccine disagreement. Deputy Health Secretary Jim O’Neill had served as acting director until last week.
