Conservative Anglican leaders have overhauled Gafcon’s leadership and signal a sharper break from the historic Anglican Communion. On Thursday, leaders meeting in Abuja replaced the Gafcon Primates Council with a new Global Anglican Council. Gafcon says the council gives primates, bishops, clergy and lay members equal voting power. Leaders say the old “instruments of communion” no longer work for most Anglicans. The split reflects long disputes over same-sex marriage and openly LGBTQ clergy in Europe and North America. Some churches already skip Anglican gatherings. Rwanda’s Archbishop Laurent Mbanda becomes chair and urges orthodox Anglicans to join by signing the Jerusalem Declaration.
