'The Hunting Wives' Season 2: Why the Future of the Netflix Series Is in Limbo

Those eagerly waiting for The Hunting Wives season 2 might want to know why the show’s future at Netflix isn’t guaranteed.

The salacious murder mystery, which is based on the 2021 novel by May Cobb, follows Sophie (Brittany Snow) as she moves from Boston to Texas and falls into an elite group of southern, gun-toting women led by Margo (Malin Akerman).

As she attempts to assimilate into the conservative, anti-abortion, and pro-gun Republican group, who have a penchant for partying, Sophie gets dragged into Margo’s drama, at risk to her own life.

Its 8-episode first season and a twisty cliffhanger ending have left fans of the show clamouring for more. However, this may not be your typical show renewal story.

Will There Be a ‘The Hunting Wives’ Season 2?

The Hunting Wives has not yet been renewed for season 2, so we will have to wait to see if it gets picked up.

The Hunting Wives is in a unique position when it comes to getting a season 2 on Netflix since it is not a Netflix Original. Per Deadline, up until a little over a month before premiering on Netflix on July 21, The Hunting Wives was a Starz drama, produced by Lionsgate. When the streamer parted ways with Lionsgate, the latter acquired the rights to the show.

 Netflix has exclusive licensing rights in the U.S. for a year, and the cast can opt in for new seasons. However, Lionsgate remains in charge of the show’s international distribution, and the future of the show lies in the studio’s hands, not Netflix’s.

However, we have no doubts that The Hunting Wives has a strong chance of landing a second season. Netflix bills the show as “Season 1,” not a “limited series,” so they certainly seem optimistic. Per Deadline, the show amassed 5.2 million views in its first week and has been charting high on the platform.

What Has ‘The Hunting Wives’ Cast Said About Season 2?

The cast of the show seems open to coming back for season 2. In July, Akerman told People that she “definitely” wants a second season.

“Not only to see it all play out, but when you get to go back to a show over and over again, it’s like going to summer camp and seeing the people that you love the most,” she explained. “That’s what this show feels like. I loved everyone on the cast and crew.”

“If we get a second season, I’ll be so, so happy,” she said.

In an interview with Collider, Akerman’s costar, Snow, said there is plenty left to be seen in season 2, “There are a lot of questions that didn’t get answered because Rebecca [Cutter, the show’s creator] wants to answer them in the next season if we get one.”

What Would ‘The Hunting Wives’ Cast Season 2 Be About?

Cutter already revealed to Variety that season 2 would begin with “a little bit of a time jump — not a year, but a time.”

Cutter also said that Sophie and Margo’s relationship would, of course, be at the center of any plot. “The first thing I’m thinking about is, where are these two women at the start? Where are they at the end? What are the peaks and valleys of their individual power, of their relationship? So it’s tracking a course for that, and then figuring out what the crime engine is.”
