It could be argued that they did that to us as "Feck you" because of the way Sullivan felt he was treated. He was in this game for the prestige of being a club owner, his image was everything, he wanted adulation. When he didn't get it, he looked elsewhere. I don't think he could ever get his head around the fact we didn't love him. Why fans were bothered about him owning the "The Sport" when most were buying it.
Most fans just never got on board with the fact he was a "Cockney wide boy" so to speak, and were never going to accept him.
But I digress...I think I meant this "kind" of owner...a UK based owner that knows how to run a successful business and knows a bit about football in general.
Not even a "sugar daddy" type, just someone that is succesful in business.
Interesting stuff. What conclusions can we draw from it though?
My conclusions would be that whoever the owners are there will come a point where the fans will find reason to dislike them. They're not English. They're not Brummies. They're not 'football people'. They care more about their profile than they do about the club. They have no ambition. They won't spend their money on players etc. In short, other than a mega rich Brummie with a spending jones who will buy us promotion and then entry into the Premier League top six (Mid-term. After two or three seasons fans will be demanding top four and silverware) no owner is ever going to satisfy the fans.
If they communicate their plans and their plans fail they'll be pilloried. If they don't communicate they'll be pilloried. If they spend big but the players fail they'll be pilloried. If they spend small and try to grow from the academy they'll be pilloried. Win but not entertain? Pilloried. Entertain but not win? Pilloried. Overspend? Pilloried. Underspend? Pilloried.
Pleasing football fans is like herding cats and then the fans wonder why football owners buy clubs if they're not going to bother to please the fan base. You don't really matter, that's why. And even if you did you're so bloody fickle you just become a millstone, a constant source of aggravation. Your club is a vanity project to them. Or a means to an end to gain entry into another social strata, previously denied them, via the respectability of being a football club owner as opposed to a scrap merchant or a dildo salesman. Or your club is a lucrative listing on a stock exchange, or a vehicle to launder money, or a means to dodge tax, or a way to enveigle yourself into the good books of your glorious leader who's a football fanatic and wants China to become a footballing super power.
Qbeeb, you've got an extremely black outlook on football in general and the fans in particular. Can't say you are entirely wrong in that post but I don't think it's entirely right either. It's just the extreme of all that is bad in general with football. We actually aren't that hard to please, as fans go, it's taken a catalogue of feck ups (including the same ones repeated) by Dong to get a lot of us slightly miffed. Honestly believe that given a bit of direction, a bit of a way forward, then most Blues fans would be putting on the blue and white jester hats and the big, wavy, sponge hands again.
