More from former Sports Minister Tracey Crouch on football's finances: “When we published the fan-led review, it was a week or so after the Saudi-led takeover of Newcastle. Lots of people were asking me would it have stopped that. The government has been very clear, this is not about foreign policy, it is about integrity within football.
“I don’t know the details of that takeover. We need to be careful in terms of applying one set of rules to football that are above and beyond other rules elsewhere in business. The Saudis have major stakes in things like Disney, Facebook, Uber and other things. Why shouldn’t they have a major stake in football?
“But, it is important that we know where the money is coming from, that it is not secured in nefarious ways. That is why there was always concern around [former Chelsea owner] Roman Abramovich, for example.”
