DermaRite Has Recalled Dozens of Personal-Care Products
Sorry to pile it on, but here’s some more unpleasant news: Dozens of personal-care products, including hand and body washes, lotions, and sanitizers, have been recalled because they could cause sepsis. While DermaRite Industries initially recalled a number of its products in mid-July due to potential bacteria contamination, the health-hygiene company expanded the voluntary recall to include 32 of its offerings on August 27 “out of an abundance of caution.”
The bacteria in question is called Burkholderia cepacia complex, or Bcc, and is often found in soil, water, and plants. It can cause serious infections in those who are immunocompromised or deal with lung diseases, especially cystic fibrosis. While healthy individuals should be generally safe, infections could happen if the bacteria entered through even minor skin lesions — and the recalled products usually make contact with the skin. Many strains of Bcc are antibiotic-resistant, making an infection more difficult to treat.
While DermaRite’s line is largely used in nursing homes and hospitals, retailers in the United States and Puerto Rico carry it too. A few of the recalled products include Renew Skin Repair, a skin cream; KleenFoam, an anti-microbial foam soap; and Gel Rite, a gel hand sanitizer.
