5 things we’ve learned from Tottenham’s draw with Everton
Tottenham’s seasons is far from over. Spurs will travel to Madrid for one of the biggest, if not the biggest game in the club’s history.
However, before the excitement of playing in the final of the Champions League and preparation for it ensued, the Lilywhites had to face Everton at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the last game of the 2018/19 Premier League season.
Eric Dier’s early effort provided a good start for Mauricio Pochettino’s men. Nonetheless, two goals from Walcott and Tosun in quick succession put the Toffees ahead. Christian Eriksen responded with a magnificent free-kick in the 75th minute and settled the score on 2-2.
Tottenham finished fourth in the table, one point above bitter rivals Arsenal and one point below Chelsea.
Here are five things we’ve learned from the game:
- Long and tiring season
It has been an extremely tiring season for the players. Tottenham competed in four competitions this year including the Champions League and Carabao Cup. This was particularly showed by Pochettino’s half-time substitution when he took off exhausted Dele Alli. Thankfully, the players will now have a three-week break from official matches, before they face Liverpool in the Champions League final in Madrid on June 1st.
2. Sissoko’s transformation
Sissoko’s transformation this season has been incredible. Once again, the French midfielder stood out on the pitch against Everton. His tackles were spot on and his drive forward was immense. He really does make all the difference in Pochettino’s midfield set up.
3. Christian Eriksen’s free kicks
Christian Eriksen has not forgotten how to take free-kicks. The Dutchman showed off his technique when he hammered the ball into the bottom left corner of Jordan Pickford’s goal. His free-kick confidence is back just in time for the Champions League final
4. Love for Eric Dier
Fans still love Eric Dier. Our defensive midfielder, or defender as it was the case against the Toffees, put Tottenham in front just after three minutes of play. As the game continued, a loud “I love Eric Dier, Eric Dier loves me” rejoiced around the stadium. Despite not having the best of seasons due to injuries and fitness problems, fans still showed their support for the English man.
5. The connection between the fans and the manager
There is an incredible connection between the supporters and the manager. Everyone adores Mauricio Pochettino and the work that he has done to transform this club from a Europa League side to a Premier League giant. A loud “Mauricio Pochettino is magic, you know” could be heard throughout the game, as well as during the appreciation lap. A victory in Madrid will surely guarantee him a status of a legend in north London if he hasn’t got one already.
The season has been tough and long. However, the one game remaining will be one of the greatest occasions for the manager, the players, and the fans. Winning the Champions League will defy all the odds against the club. The injuries this season, the unlucky draws in the European competition, coming back home to N17. Despite all that the Lilywhites will proudly represent north London in the final of one of the greatest football competitions. Come On You Spurs!
