Tottenham Hotspur have been struggling this season, with a large portion of that struggle coming in the backline.
Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen have been first-choice players under Pochettino for many years now, striking up a mean partnership between the Belgian duo.
However, they seem to have lost the edge and class from their game this season so far, as Spurs have conceded 12 goals in the Premier League in eight games and a whopping nine goals in just two Champions League encounters.
In fact, the only clean sheets kept by Spurs so far this season have come in a 4-0 win over Crystal Palace and a 0-0 with Colchester, although the latter defeated Tottenham on penalties.
If Pochettino is to look further down his ranks in terms of central defenders, past the likes of Toby, Jan, Sanchez, and Foyth, there are a couple of promising academy graduates to choose from.
Japhet Tanganga is impressing at Spurs this season, while Cameron Carter-Vickers has been applauded by some fans of both Stoke and Swansea after his performance on-loan at the former this week. CCV was also on loan at the Welsh club last season.
Carter Vickers was throwing his body on the line all game. He was solid. We've been weird at home lately. Still, I'd be happy with a top 6 place. We're not good enough for top 2 imo.

Cameron Carter Vickers – classy player. I like him a lot. #SCFC

Almost as if their best defender was on loan with us last year… Someone tell me why Carter-Vickers wasn’t brought back he’s a quality centre back

83% pass…7/11 Long balls completed…lead the championship pass % for a centerback last season …”no we don’t have CBs that can play out of the back” sigh…

Spurs Web Opinion:
Perhaps a partnership of Tanganga and Carter-Vickers could be the answer. To be honest, at this point, I wouldn’t even argue if Pochettino named a back four of Sessegnon, Tanganga, Carter-Vickers, and Walker-Peters, purely to refresh this stale Spurs squad.
