Tottenham Hotspur have always produced quality players for the England national side, with Harry Kane and Harry Winks being the latest examples.
However, while the former is the captain of his country and a regular goalscorer, Harry Winks has found it tough to break into Gareth Southgate’s plans.
The England manager went for a midfield of Declan Rice and Jordan Henderson against the Czech Republic on Friday, a duo that lacked creativity, composure, and quality on the night.
Southgate has now claimed that it may be time to give the nod to some of his more experienced players over youngsters such as Rice.
Football London seems to think that the gaffer is hinting that Harry Winks will get a chance against Bulgaria today. The Mirror have also claimed that Harry Winks and Tyrone Mings are set to start the match.
This comes as Winks has already played 106 games for Tottenham at 23-years-old, including various Champions League matches and even a Champions League Final.
However, Winks only has three England caps and has not featured for the team since 2018.
Southgate said: “There are players who we’re giving football to in key areas, like Declan Rice, who’s still 20 years old.
“I’ve got to always remember that, that we’re putting a lot of onus on young players and sometimes it’s important for you to turn to your more experienced players in those moments, and say: ‘OK, this is the time for a solid performance, get back on track.’
“Remember the objective is to qualify. We’ve been trying to qualify, develop the team, blood players – and the other night that didn’t quite work for us. But, it’s the first time it hasn’t.”
Spurs Web Opinion:
This seems like a no-brainer to me. Winks is by far England’s best holding central midfielder. He has far more creativity than both Henderson and Rice, as well as being more comfortable on the ball and capable of retaining possession.
