Tottenham Hotspur held talks with Atalanta right-back Timothy Castagne but decided that they could not afford him, according to Belgian news outlet Sport/Voetbalmagazine.
The report claims that Spurs head coach Jose Mourinho personally spoke to the 24-year-old about a move to North London.
Tottenham are said to have switched their attention to Wolves’ Matt Doherty where they felt the Republic of Ireland international represented better value for money.
Doherty is reported to have moved to North London for a fee of £13.4million with no add-ons (Football.London).
Instead, Castagne earlier this week completed a deal for Castagne for an undisclosed fee wand penned a five-year deal with Brendan Rodgers’ side, his arrival could see him operating at left-back after Ben Chilwell completed a move to Chelsea (BBC).
Castagne admitted in June that he would not be able to turn down a move to Tottenham if a bid was received.
He told La Derniere Heure:”You have to be honest with yourself. When a team like PSG or Tottenham come knocking on your door, you can’t say ‘no’.”
