As is always the case with this time of the year, Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a whole host of potential signings this month.
The likes of Marcel Sabitzer, Sergio Ramos, Milan Skriniar, Arkadiusz Milik, Diego Costa and many others have all been mentioned as January targets for the club.
Although Spurs’ recent results have left a lot to be desired, the club still look to have a great opportunity to achieve something special this season, given how tight it is at the top end of the Premier League.
Therefore, some Tottenham fans might well be hoping that Daniel Levy sees this as a chance to invest and give Mourinho the tools he needs to make a real fist of it.
However, Ian McGarry has said on the Transfer Window Podcast that the Spurs hierarchy are looking at the situation differently.
The journalist claims that the likes of Spurs and Manchester United do not wish to spend money if they do not need to under the current financial circumstances.
He suggests that the North Londoners will wait to see how results pan out this month before deciding whether the team needs reinforcements.
McGarry said: “This is a very different window as we have pointed out, due to the effect of football finances and Covid.
“It is our information, that both Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have decided to wait and see in terms of results, these are two clubs of course that are mounting a credible title challenge to Liverpool, but at the same time struggling, I don’t suppose Manchester United are struggling financially, but they did make a loss in the last financial year, as did Spurs.
“The idea that forward planning includes waiting to see what happens in terms of results’ IE ‘if we’re succeeding with what we’ve got, why change it and why spend money?’ Compared to, ‘we’ve got a real chance of winning the title here’.”

If it is indeed the case that the club are waiting to see how the results pan out before making a decision on transfers, then our last few results should have certainly convinced Levy that we need reinforcements in central defence. Mourinho hinted at issues with personnel rather than tactics after the 1-1 draw against Fulham and I suspect he was talking about our centre-backs’ inability to mark players inside the box.
