Kevin Phillips believes that a move to Southampton could help to reinvigorate Harry Winks’ career amidst reports that the Saints have their sights on the Tottenham midfielder.
Winks has struggled to get a consistent run of games in the side right from the start of the campaign under Jose Mourinho.
The midfielder has not impressed in the few opportunities that have come his way over recent months and looks unlikely to feature much between now and the end of the season.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso and Moussa Sissoko are seemingly ahead of the academy graduate in the pecking order.
It was previously reported that the 25-year-old was on the radars of Atletico Madrid, Valencia, Sevilla and Everton ahead of the summer transfer window.
It then emerged last week that Southampton were also keeping tabs on the England international as Ralph Hasenhuttl looks to bolster his midfield options ahead of next season.
Phillips believes that Winks could thrive at the St Mary’s as the Saints’ style of play would suit the midfielder.
When asked about Southampton’s rumoured interest in the Tottenham star, the former Sunderland striker told Football Insider: “I like him and the good thing is that he would go there and play week in week out.
“They like to play football and to have the ball. They’re tidy and like to play out from the back so I think Southampton would suit him.
“His future lies away from Tottenham and Southampton is a great club to bring you on and the big thing for him is that he can go somewhere to play regular football on a regular basis in the Premier League.”
Spurs Web Opinion
I believe that a move to a La Liga side would be ideal for Winks’ career but it is difficult to see any Spanish club meeting Tottenham’s valuation of the midfielder under the current financial climate. So a move to a club like Leeds, Sunderland or Brighton, who like to play out from the back, might be the best the 25-year-old could hope for this summer.
