‘Honestly, I think’ – Hugo Lloris opens up on Tanguy Ndombele at Spurs
Tottenham Hotspur and France captain, Hugo Lloris, spoke openly and honestly about compatriot and club teammate, Tanguy Ndombele this week.
Spurs’ record signing, who they shelled out £53.8m for in 2019, has endured a troubled start to his North London career.
With Mauricio Pochettino leaving his role as head coach soon after the Frenchman arrived and a rather difficult relationship with Jose Mourinho, Ndombele has never really got going in a Lilywhite shirt.
Even interim head coach Ryan Mason dropped him for the Carabao Cup Final last season after Ndombele had fought to get back into Mourinho’s good books.
Now Hugo Lloris has argued that Ndombele needs to take responsibility in the team and the changing room, adding that his teammate needs consistent game time.
He also claimed he thinks Ndombele is ready this season after learning the language and bedding into the squad, revealing there is now a smile on his face.
Lloris said (Standard): “Tanguy needs games, games, games, repetition of games.
“[He needs to] try to feel this responsibility because he’s not a young player anymore. And a player with his talent and quality must feel responsibility inside the changing room and the team.
“Honestly, I think he’s ready, his mind is ready. He’s here with a smile, he’s connected with the team and that’s the most important thing.
“Obviously, it’s the manager’s decision to play him or not play him, but I can feel his energy is back. And, for sure, he’s going to perform. I have no doubt about that.
“With Tanguy, the first season, because of the language, it was sometimes frustrating with him to not be able to talk with the others. Today, he’s totally open and he can talk and joke and share moments. That’s very important as a player, to feel connected to the team.”
Spurs Web Opinion:
It is now or never for Ndombele at Spurs. He needs to knuckle down, get fit, and make sure he is one of the first names on the team sheet. Otherwise, not only will he not play every week, but he will also find it hard to get a transfer away.
