Tim Sherwood has suggested that the Tottenham hierarchy care more about winning silverware at the moment than playing attractive football, as evidenced by the appointments of both Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte over recent years.
Tottenham came under plenty of criticism following their 3-1 loss in the North London derby two weeks ago, with some pundits questioning the Lilywhites lack of ambition (talkSPORT).
However, despite the criticism levelled at Spurs, their results so far this season have been encouraging, with the team having won six and drawn two of their nine league matches this season, scoring 20 goals in the process.
Football Insider reported last week that the Tottenham hierarchy are not put off by the criticism Conte has attracted from some quarters over his style of play, and are ready to offer him a new contract worth £20million-a-year, which would make him the highest-paid manager in the Premier League.
Sherwood has now said that Spurs fans need to get used to their current style of play and backed Conte to deliver silverware to the club.
When asked if we will see Conte’s men playing more attractive football in the coming months, the pundit told Sky Sports News (08/10/22): “No chance, absolutely zero chance. Everyone knows Antonio Conte’s style. Some people like it, and some people don’t. The players have to buy into it.
“The emotion of that game, with it being the north London derby, it hurts the fans. It’s not pretty to watch. But why should Antonio Conte change? He does what he does over the years because he wins. Everywhere he has been, he has won.
“All he needs to do is win a trophy. We haven’t won a trophy for a very, very long time. But I think that they are capable of winning under this guy. I really believe in him. Don’t worry about the style. He doesn’t care if he’s entertaining or not, as long as he’s winning.
“The fans are going to have to get used to it. I don’t think he needs to change. Why should he? It’s not his fault he plays that style of football, it’s the person who brought him into the football club.
“If the demands are to play a certain way, then don’t bring Antonio Conte or Jose Mourinho into the football club. If you want someone who is going to give you a trophy, then bring Conte to the club.”
Spurs Web Opinion
The issue with playing this kind of football is that the moment that results start tailing off, fans will quickly turn on Conte – just as it happened with Jose Mourinho. However, Conte’s track record suggests that results will not fall off a cliff as the Italian has won trophies everywhere playing the exact same way.
