Matt Doherty was back in action for the Republic of Ireland on Thursday night when he played the full 90 minutes of their 2-1 friendly defeat to Iceland.
The right wing-back has had a difficult season to date at Tottenham Hotspur having found himself behind Emerson Royal in Antonio Conte’s pecking order, having started just three of the north Londoners’ fifteen Premier League matches prior to the break for the World Cup (transfermarkt).
With the Republic of Ireland having failed to qualify for the tournament in Qatar, they found themselves going down at the Aviva Stadium at the hands of the Norwegians.
Doherty’s performance came under the microscope from some Irish media outlets and appeared to be a figure of isolation at times, with his final ball delivery also questioned.
Pundit Arena: 6 – Got up and down the right flank as usual but little end product. Regularly cut into the box to get on the end of crosses from the left, as is often the case with the Spurs man, but to no avail tonight.
Irish Times: Displayed admirable bravery in daring to be the only outfield Irish player willing to accept it was pretty cold at the Aviva by going for a long sleeves and black gloves combo. Didn’t contribute enough going forward in the first half but was much better in the second. Rating: 6
Extra: 6. Isolated in the drab first half, but was able to fire in some better service in the much-improved second half.

Prior to picking up a knee injury at Aston Villa last season, it looked as if Doherty was going to finally live up to expectations at Tottenham with a number of solid performances against the likes of Leeds United and Everton.
