The Daily Express journalist Ryan Taylor has claimed that Tottenham accepted back in the summer that Josko Gvardiol was beyond their price range.
Gvardiol was reported to be one of Spurs’ top targets for the left centre-back role in the summer (Football.London) but Antonio Conte’s men signed Clement Lenglet on loan instead, with the Croat staying put at Leipzig.
Some reports over recent weeks had backed Tottenham to reignite their interest in the 20-year-old in January (Tuttosport) but the youngster’s performances for Croatia at the World Cup seem to have attracted the attention of some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
In fact, journalist Alfredo Pedulla stated last week that Manchester City are ready to offer a whopping €130m (£113.5m) for Gvardiol, and could hand the player a salary of around €12m (£10.4) per season.
Taylor has now stated Tottenham accepted even back in the summer that the Leipzig star was out of their price range.
He told GiveMeSport regarding Gvardiol: “I think there was an acceptance last summer that he was already out of Spurs’ price range because Chelsea had a proposal worth about €80 million rejected by Leipzig, which included him spending a year back on loan at the club, so he’s out of Spurs’ league.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Spurs were never going to get into a bidding war with the likes of Man City, Chelsea and Real Madrid for Gvardiol. I believe Alessandro Bastoni will likely be the North London club’s top target for next summer as the Inter star is the next best option for the left centre-back role.
