Cristian Stellini has insisted that the first-team coaching staff at Tottenham are confident about the direction the team is headed in and expect to stay at the club for a ‘long time’. 

There have been plenty of concerning reports regarding Conte’s future over the last couple of weeks, with The Athletic reporting recently that the chances of the Italian walking away at the end of the season have gone up compared to a few months ago.

However, this has been contradicted by Alasdair Gold, who said on his YouTube channel on December 22 that Spurs are still hopeful that the former Inter Milan boss will put pen to paper on a new deal.

Although the North London club have the option to extend Conte’s current contract, which runs out at the end of the season, by a further 12 months, reports indicate that the club will not activate the clause if the Italian does not want to stay (Gazzetta dello Sport 04/01/23 via Sport Witness).

However, Stellini has now given a positive update on his and Conte’s future at the club, stating that there is confidence that a solution can be reached.

When asked about the contract talks, Tottenham’s assistant head coach told Football.London: “Every time we have confidence on this.

“It’s not about the contract. It’s about the project, it’s about the future, and we are confident every time. Fifteen months is not a big period. We are in the way we expect after 15 months. For that reason, we are in confidence.

“I don’t know [how long it will take to reach success]. We don’t know, but we are in the right moment after 15 months, if we compare our period to other periods in the past. We are in a good moment. We have to work.

“Like Antonio has said many times, we need passion and heart in the work. It’s not the time of the contract that decides. Your behaviour is the work you do to decide the result. We are confident to stay here a long time because we are working hard and the players follow us.”

I do not think this comment from Stellini would sit particularly well with Conte, who has been delivering mixed messages in press conferences about his future to pile the pressure on the Tottenham hierarchy.

I have always been quite convinced that the Italian will stay as he has a very good job on his hands in the best league in the world and is working with a squad of some world-class players, who have completely bought into his methods and ideas.

Conte’s strategy of not being too committal is probably political and is designed to get as much backing as possible in the transfer window, rather than a case of him genuinely threatening to leave.
