Cristian Stellini has spoken to the press in place of Antonio Conte, who is recovering from surgery, and the Tottenham Hotspur assistant manager has commented on the club’s activity in the January transfer window.
It ended up being a fairly eventful month for Spurs in the end, albeit a very frustrating one, too. The club spent the month trying to sign Pedro Porro from Sporting Lisbon, with various obstacles delaying the move before he finally arrived in North London on deadline day.
Porro joins Spurs on an initial loan deal worth £5 million until the end of the season, when an obligation to buy clause will see the club pay a further £39 million to make the move permanent (Sky Sports).
Before Porro signed, Spurs were able to swoop in at the last minute and pick up Arnaut Danjuma on loan until the end of the season. The Villarreal attacker was all set to sign for Everton, before Tottenham came in and stole him away from under the noses of the Toffees (The Athletic).
The window also saw Matt Doherty leave the club permanently, joining Atletico Madrid on a free transfer (Sky Sports), while Bryan Gil joined Sevilla on loan (Daily Mail), and Djed Spence signed until the end of the season with French side Stade Rennais (BBC).
Speaking on the matter of transfers, Stellini told Football.London: “I am not the right person to ask about the transfer window. We have to say thanks to the players who go to play for another club. Matt Doherty, Djed Spence and Bryan Gil are three great players.”
“[I am] so happy to work with them. We can say only thanks, a big thanks for them. They are also great players and great guys. Every time I’m sad when the transfer window closes because you have this balance to be sad and excited to work the new players,” he added.
“We are excited to work with Porro and Danjuma but sad to say goodbye to Doherty, Spence and Gil,” the assistant manager concluded.
Doherty’s departure was said to have left the Tottenham dressing room surprised by the decision to see the Republic of Ireland international depart the club on a permanent basis (Football.London).

It was an odd transfer window for Spurs. We could and should have done more, like work on the centre of defence, but I do believe we’ve taken a positive step forward in general with the signing of Porro, and hopefully Danjuma can be a real asset for us too.
