Harry Kane has wished Antonio Conte the best in his future endeavours, admitting that he had a ‘great relationship’ with the Italian.

The writing seemed on the wall for Conte at Spurs for quite a while and his position seemingly become untenable after his spectacular tirade against the players following the 3-3 draw at Everton.

Noticeably, hardly any Tottenham players took to social media to thank the Italian or wish him well after his departure, which was quite telling.

That is perhaps explained by some reports suggesting over the last two weeks that the players had grown tired of the 53-year-old’s tendency to shift blame onto them after losses and the erratic manner in which he would schedule training sessions (Daily Mail).

However, Kane only had good things to say about Conte, remarking that it was unfortunate that things did not work out for him at Spurs.

When asked about the Italian’s departure, the striker told The Evening Standard: “Obviously I wish Antonio all the best.

“I had a great relationship with him and it was just unfortunate that for one reason or another, it didn’t quite work.

“I wish him luck in his next adventure and in the meantime, we’ll continue to fight with Cristian, Ryan [Mason, acting assistant head coach] and the staff and try and achieve what we set out to.

Kane refused to talk about Conte’s accusation of the players of being selfish following the draw at Goodison Park, suggesting that the Italian might have let his emotions get the better of him.

When asked about the now infamous rant, the striker responded: “I’m not going to get into [what Conte said].

“It was an emotional moment after we should have won the game and to concede two goals in the way we did, we were all disappointed.

“He’s a great man, his emotions come out at times and that’s who he is and he owns that.

“Us players we talk amongst ourselves [about the need] to keep fighting and keep improving.

“We know that Southampton game, we know the Everton game last week we need to do better in those moments when we’re leading.

“Overall, all we can do is keep trying to fight and that’s what we’ll do.”

Kane’s answer is as respectful and diplomatic as one would have expected from the striker but the fact that even the England captain did not react publicly to Conte’s exit until he was asked about it, is quite telling.

While I have no doubt that the striker would have reached out to Conte privately, the players’ hesitance to do so publicly suggests that the 53-year-old was not a popular figure in the dressing room towards the end.

So, the likes of Kane and Son might have wanted to upset some of their teammates by praising the Italian publicly.
