The Premier League has announced that the 2023/24 campaign will feature a mid-season break to help with fixture congestion.
The current season saw an extended break stretching through November and December 2022. That was due to the World Cup being held in Qatar during the winter.
The knock-on effect of that break has seen the 2022/23 season become rather congested at times. In the first half of the campaign, teams competing in European tournaments were playing two to three times a week.
As we head into the final run-in of matches in the Premier League, some teams find themselves with games in hand that are yet to be organised.
Spurs are not one of those teams, and will have all eyes on the remaining eight games in the domestic campaign this year.
However, we can begin to look ahead to next season as details have emerged regarding the league’s plans to incorporate a break in the campaign.
As per the plans revealed on the Tottenham Hotspur website, there will be a “pause in play” between January 13 and January 20 2024.
There will also be a process to improve fixture congestion over the festive period, which will see “no two rounds of matches across Christmas and New Year take place within 48 hours of each other.”
The 2023/24 season will include 34 weekends, with three midweek rounds of games, and one Bank Holiday match round.
It has also been revealed that Tottenham’s fixture list for next season will be released on 15 June 2023.
Spurs Web Opinion
The impact of the 2022 World Cup and the break that came with it was definitely detrimental to this campaign, but the plans for this shorter break do sound like they will have a positive effect on the season next year.
Hopefully, that will complement European fixtures, too (and hopefully Spurs actually have that to worry about).
