Alasdair Gold has revealed in his latest column for Football.London that Djed Spence is desperate to impress Ange Postecoglou during pre-season and stake a claim for a first-team role at Tottenham during the upcoming campaign.
There was a lot of excitement about Spence’s arrival in North London 12 months ago following his breakthrough season on loan at Nottingham Forest in the Championship.
However, the 2022-23 campaign was one to forget for the 22-year-old who did not get a single start for Spurs during the first half of the season before being shipped off on loan at Rennes.
While he made a promising start to his spell at France, the right-back once again found himself warming the bench in the final couple of months of the campaign.
Djed Spence’s future at Tottenham
Gold has now revealed that the England Under-21 international, along with the other non-internationals will begin pre-season work with Postecoglou on Monday, July 3.
He states that Spence is keen to make a good first impression on the new Spurs head coach so that he can push his way into the team.
The journalist explains that the right-back does not wish to go out on loan again next season but adds that it might end up being a ‘necessity’, given that Emerson Royal and Pedro Porro are at the club.
Gold adds that the former Middlesbrough man is determined to ‘give it his best shot’ to catch the Australian’s eye next month.
Spurs Web Opinion
I am sceptical about whether Pedro Porro can adapt to the demands of an inverted full-back role, which Postecoglou prefers.
So, I can see a world where the Australian opts to use the Spaniard further forward, thus allowing Emerson to battle it out with Spence for the right-back role next season.
