Eric Dier is set to return to full training following the recovery from his injury, and is now expected to stay with Tottenham Hotspur for the forthcoming season despite reports he could leave the club.
The 29-year-old has been with Tottenham since the summer of 2014 and is now one of the longest-serving players in the squad.
Dier has amassed 361 appearances for the Lilywhites, scoring 13 goals and registering 12 assists during his nine years in North London (Transfermarkt).
Despite impressing in the 2021/22 campaign, it was a different story for Dier last season.
The experienced centre-half was supposed to be a leader at the back for Spurs, but was responsible for a number of disappointing errors across the season that cost his side dearly.
With just a year left on his current contract, there had been talk of Dier being moved on this summer. Tottenham are expected to have a clear out during this transfer window and it was believed the club were willing to listen to offers for Dier (Telegraph).
However, a recent report from The Athletic claimed Dier would more than likely remain at the club and then leave for nothing next year.
Dier is fit and set to stay at Spurs for another year
Now, the latest from The Athletic reporter Charlie Eccleshare reveals Eric Dier is set to ‘link up’ with new manager Ange Postecoglou and the rest of the squad to prepare for the upcoming Premier League campaign.
The report revealed Dier has now “recovered” following an operation on his groin and will be “available for the start of pre-season” with Spurs.
Despite speculation about his future, it is now believed Dier’s “focus is on next season” and the player is now “expected to stay this summer.”
Dier is said to be “fully fit” and is preparing to get to work with his new manager and the Tottenham players.
Spurs Web Opinion
While we will hopefully be bringing in a high-quality centre-back to partner Cristian Romero this summer, I do think it makes sense to keep someone like Dier in the squad for now.
He has lots of experience and authority and can be useful for squad depth.
