Football.London have now released the second part of the interview that Eric Dier gave to the outlet in Singapore last month, with the centre-back confirming his intention to stay at Tottenham.
Dier has been left out of Tottenham’s matchday squads against Brentford and Manchester United by Ange Postecoglou, with his future now seemingly up in the air.
The Athletic reported on Monday that Spurs face a ‘tense situation’ with the centre-back as they would prefer to cash in on him but the player wants to remain at the club and see out the final year of his contract.
The publication added that while the 29-year-old might be open to the right loan move, he is unlikely to accept a permanent transfer.
Football.London have now revealed what Dier himself said about his future at Spurs and his contract situation during the club’s pre-season trip to Singapore.
Eric Dier plans on staying at Spurs for another year
The defender is quoted as saying: “Yeah, I’m planning on being here! I can control what I can control. I can control playing well, being fit, training well, playing well.
“Those are the things I can control. Those kind of things [such as contract talks] are something that involve other people. So there needs to be mutuality there. I can’t speak for the other side (and whether Spurs want to give him a new deal).
“All I can say is, look, I’m going to do what I can do, control what I can control and try to have a great season.”
In the interview, Dier also defended his own form, claiming that he was playing some of the best football of his career prior to picking up a groin injury midway into last season.
He added: “The last six months of the season before and the first six months of last season were about as good as I’ve ever played. I felt really, really good. Obviously then going to the World Cup was fantastic, getting back in the England squad. Not just those six months, but that year.
“Then the following six months I think there was just a culmination of things that just I think impacted the team and impacted the club and the team and everything. It became a very difficult six months collectively and individually for many people.
“For myself, I started to struggle a lot physically. Obviously, I ended up having surgery at the end of the season.
“It was very difficult for me. I don’t care about excuses or anything but looking back it was a very difficult six months physically for me given what I was suffering with and now it feels fantastic to have the surgery and feel 100 per cent again.
“I think that had a big impact on me in those six months. Then there were many things that had an impact on me on what was going on, the results, everything.”
Spurs Web Opinion
It is astonishing how quickly Spurs fans forgot how good Dier was in the first 12 months under Antonio Conte. While I can certainly understand why some feel that he is not a good fit for Ange Postecoglou’s system, he does not deserve anywhere near the disrespect that he has been getting from so-called supporters on social media.
