Ange Postecoglou has refuted suggestions that Tottenham are ahead of schedule, insisting that he has never put any limit on what the team can achieve this season.
Even the most optimistic of Spurs fans would not have expected such a bright start to the Postecoglou era, particularly after the departure of the club’s record goalscorer, Harry Kane.
The Lilywhites have surprised supporters and pundits alike with the performances they have delivered, sitting just a point behind league leaders Manchester City after seven Premier League games.
Tottenham are now one of just two unbeaten sides in the division and given the struggles of Manchester United and Chelsea so far this season, they now appear to be in the mix for Champions League qualification.
Postecoglou does not have a Tottenham schedule
Postecoglou has now explained that he did not have any particular objective in mind at the start of the season, and called on his players to ‘keep pushing’ to see what they can achieve.
When asked if Spurs are ahead of schedule and whether he could have imagined such a good start, the 58-year-old told Football.London: “I think I’ve been at pains to say that I don’t have a schedule I’m marking it against. It is what it is.
“It’s fair to say that we’ve had some significant challenges in the first seven weeks of the season and the way we’ve dealt with them I’ve been really pleased, including today.
“Obviously you want to put the game to bed earlier than when we did but sometimes when you score that late it just helps to continue to build that belief in the group and the spirit within the group that we have that in us to go to the last minute.
“All these things, they’re not by design, it’s just the nature of the game and I’m not sitting here thinking we’re ahead of some schedule.
“I can understand why some people might have had that in their minds because they’re making prognostications based on the information they have, but for me it’s just not of interest because I don’t know how far we can go with the group. We just need to keep pushing on.”
Spurs Web Opinion
There is no doubt that Conte would have used this opportunity to play down expectations and talk about how the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool are way ahead of us at the moment.
It is refreshing to see that Ange has enough confidence in the team to allow fans and the media to get carried away. Based on the way the players’ body language and character they have shown, I get the feeling that internally, they believe they can achieve something special this season.
