Richarlison has been dropped from the Brazil squad for the upcoming international break, and now the Tottenham Hotspur man has been told why.
It could be shaping up to be yet another difficult season for Richarlison this year, although perhaps not quite as bad as last season.
The 26-year-old struggled for form and fitness last term under Antonio Conte, and ended the campaign with just three goals (Transfermarkt).
Since the departure of Harry Kane this summer, Richarlison has been given more game time by Ange Postecoglou.
He has two goals already this year (Transfermarkt) but has been pushed out to the left side of the attack due to Heung-min Son‘s form as the central striker.
Richarlison was an unused substitute for the game against Chelsea earlier this week, and has since revealed he is going to undergo surgery for a pelvis issue (ESPN).
Why was Richarlison dropped by Brazil?
It’s no surprise then, that Brazil have opted against calling up the Spurs man for the upcoming games against Colombia and Argentina. But we have a definitive answer thanks to Brazil boss Fernando Diniz.
Diniz told Globo Esporte: “I think that more than the system, I have to look at everything that’s going on. I believe that the players I’ve called up will be in a better position to deliver what I’m expecting at the moment.
“Richarlison is an excellent player, he played very well in the main competition in the world, which is the World Cup, and he didn’t deliver what he could, but he didn’t play badly, especially in the first leg against Bolivia and Peru.
“It’s just that the national team is a national team, he competes with other great players, and at the moment I preferred to call up others.”
Spurs Web Opinion
I’m not sure why Gabriel Jesus has been called up, to be honest, but Richarlison’s situation makes sense really. He’s not fully fit, and he’s not in good form for his country, so he doesn’t deserve the call at this moment.
