Journalist Dean Jones has said that when it comes to signing a forward in January, the number one quality that Ange Postecolgou is looking for in the potential newcomer is versatility.
This week, we relayed a report from The Daily Mirror which claimed that Postecoglou is optimistic that Tottenham will sign a striker in January.
The outlet claimed that the Lilywhites continue to eye a move for Ivan Toney but Brentford do not intend on letting their star man leave, while adding that Spurs are also keeping a close eye on Feyenoord’s Santiago Gimenez.
Meanwhile, Football Insider reported earlier this week that Tottenham are open to offloading Richarlison, who is attracting interest from Saudi Pro League clubs ahead of January.
The outlet stated that Spurs are expected to accept any big offer for the Brazilian and use the funds to sign a top centre-back.
Postecoglou wants a forward who is versatile
However, Jones has now explained that Postecoglou’s preference is to sign a versatile forward who can operate across the front three. The journalist suggested that the North London club would not consider signing a centre-forward if Richarlison stays put.
Jones told GiveMeSport: “It’s the versatility that they want more than anything and it’s an adaptation. I mean, that’s what you’ve got to be to be a Tottenham forward right now. I think they want somebody who can play the wider roles but also can move into that central role, if possible.
“Son is going to be the man that goes through the middle, nine times out of 10 now anyway, he’s got a good record of staying fit, but obviously, there is the Asia Cup coming up, and they’re going to lose them. I think that that will be something they have to contemplate.
“They still have Richarlison on the books. If Richarlison leaves then I think they go and get a more central forward, because they’re going to be short and they’ll need somebody that can go into the area.
“But if Richarlison sticks around, which at the moment is looking the most likely case then I think it’ll be someone that plays around the centre forward.”
Spurs Web Opinion
I expect Spurs to make another signing in the Brennan Johnson mould as Postecoglou has the number nine role covered with Son and Richarlison. Kulusevski and Johnson can also fill in there if required while there is also the option of playing Veliz or Donley.
