Rodrigo Bentacnur has revealed that he attended Ange Postecoglou’s team meetings even when he was out with an injury as he was keen to learn about the Australian’s methods.

While Tottenham were flying at the start of the season and playing an eye-catching brand of football, Bentancur had to watch on from the sidelines as he continued his rehabilitation from an ACL injury.

The midfielder explained that he was keen to be as involved as possible with the group during that time.

Bentancur told Sky Sports: “I was still on the same timetable as my team-mates. I tried to stay as close as possible, to follow what they were doing, above all because of the new manager and coaching staff.

The 26-year-old spent nearly an entire year on the sidelines, having picked up another knee injury on his first game back in November of last year against Aston Villa, which put him out of action for a few more weeks.

Bentancur works hard to beat injury timelines

On both occasions, Bentnacur returned to fitness earlier than he was expected to and the former Juventus man revealed that he worked as hard as he could to ensure he was back ahead of schedule.

When asked how he did it, the Tottenham man responded: “A lot of work. The physios here are amazing and they looked after me so well, as they did after the first injury. We worked every day. I barely had a break.”

“I tried to get back as quickly as possible because I knew the team had a lot of injuries already. My teammates needed me to be there and help them. I did everything I could. Fortunately, I was able to get back much earlier than expected.”

Benatancur admitted that while it was difficult to spend such a long time away from the game he loved, he used the opportunity to spend quality time with his family.

He added: “I had never really had any serious injuries before. It wasn’t easy. But I took a lot of positive things out of it. The time I had with my family was unique. I wouldn’t change it, especially not for my daughter, who is only a year and eight months old.

“I realised I had missed a lot with her due to football, so that was a special period. In the end, the time passed quite quickly. Now, it is in the past and I can focus on the present.”

It could not have been easy for Bentancur mentally when he was on the end of that Matty Cash tackle and found out he faced another month or two on the sidelines after working so hard to return to action.

The 26-year-old deserves a lot of credit for knuckling down and putting in the work once again to return as early as he did.
