Tottenham Hotspur’s defence came under some criticism at the weekend, as former Manchester United centre-half Nemanja Vidic suggested they should have done better to deal with Nottingham Forest.
While Spurs ran out the victors in a 3-1 win on Sunday night, it was anything but easy, especially in the first half.
Tottenham took the lead when Forest defender, Murillo, turned a Timo Werner cross into his own net. But, Forest levelled through a Chris Wood effort soon after, and could have taken the lead had the woodwork not stood in Wood’s way a little later in the half.
In the end, goals from Spurs defenders, Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro, were enough to get the all-important win.
Destiny Udogie should have done better against Forest
But, that Tottenham defence failed yet again to keep a clean sheet. The Spurs backline has been lamented by Vidic, with a particular focus on Destiny Udogie and the way the players communicate.
He told Premier League Productions (7/4/24 at 6:55 pm): “I think [Udogie] should hold the line. He is too far to press the ball.
“Then he puts [his teammates] in a difficult position. I think Werner should be with the player on the ball and hold that run. Don’t leave big spaces for the other three defenders to defend.
‘I think the positioning of the four players at the back wasn’t good enough and sometimes, by talking, you can solve this situation. I think any central defender should tell him ‘hold your run. Stay and you are not ready to press.’”

We know the defenders are struggling to keep things tight at the back, and it does cost us sometimes. That will eventually get better, I’m sure, but it’s also the price to pay for such an exciting, attacking approach to the game, too.
