Thomas Frank directly addresses Cristian Romero’s Tottenham Hotspur future
Thomas Frank has given an interesting response when asked if he will want to bring another top-class centre-back through the door at Tottenham this summer if Cristian Romero departs the club.
While some Spurs fans were resigned to the club’s vice-captain leaving earlier this summer, that is no longer the case, with reports now indicating that Cristian Romero looks likely to stay at Tottenham.
According to various outlets, Atletico Madrid have called off their pursuit of Romero after failing to get Spurs to the negotiating table.
The centre-back has been in pre-season training for the last week, and it has been confirmed that Romero will captain Tottenham for one half of their pre-season friendly against Reading this afternoon.

Over the last 24 hours, it has emerged that Tottenham are willing to spend over £60m on Bournemouth’s Illia Zabarnyi, who is also wanted by Paris Saint-Germain.
That may potentially suggest that the North London side are preparing for Romero to potentially exit the club this summer, but Frank refused to discuss the idea of the 27-year-old being sold.
When asked if he will push for a new centre-back to be signed if the Argentine were to leave, he responded (via Football.London): “But it’s like a theory. Right now he’s here, that’s what I’m focusing on. As long as players are here, I’m training them, I’m playing with them. He’s definitely here and very committed. I know he’s looking forward to the season.”
Why the Romero transfer saga might not be over
By the sounds of it, it does not seem that the Tottenham hierarchy and Frank expect Romero to leave.
However, reports continue to indicate that Tottenham are exploring moves for various centre-backs, which suggests that the club are making contingency plans just in case their vice-captain departs the club.
The World Cup winner does not look set to sign a new contract, even though Tottenham are ready to make Romero their highest-paid player, and if Atletico were to make an offer approaching £70m, it would be difficult for the Lilywhites to turn that down.
