I tested supermarket sausage rolls – the winner was deliciously flakey and crispy and cost just 25p each
A LOVELY meaty filling, buttery, flaky pastry and a touch of seasoning – you really can’t beat a sausage roll.
They are the perfect treat for sunny picnics, quick lunch-breaks, and quite frankly, all the times in between.
And whilst making your own can be fun, many of us like to grab and go.
That’s why we asked sausage roll addict Lynsey Hope to taste test a range of supermarket own brand options, to see which is the tastiest.
Here’s what happened:
Lidl Chef Select Sausage Rolls (360g)

- Per sausage roll: 211 calories, 13g fat, 0.5g sugar, 0.63g salt
Quite bland, these definitely needed more seasoning.
The meat was verging on tasteless.
The pastry was soft and buttery, but not as flaky as I’d have hoped. I was disappointed as I’ve enjoyed Lidl sausage rolls in the past.
They were the cheapest in our test though, so if you are watching your bills, that’s a plus.”

Asda Pork Sausage Rolls (360g)

Well filled but I thought these were too dry, especially the meat. Overly salty, too.
The puff pastry was ok but the pastry and sausage fell apart when you picked it up and tried to eat it.
The highest in calories and fat, too. Not an experience I’d care to repeat.”

Tesco Sausage Rolls (360g)

Pretty good sausage rolls, not as fatty or salty tasting as others.
The sausage meat was nicely seasoned and the pastry was soft and flaky.
These didn’t blow me away but they are pretty good value. Easy, on the go lunch or snack.”

Morrisons Fresh Bake Pork Sausage Rolls (444g)

Great value for pack of six, these are a good choice for families.
The salt and black pepper seasoning was just right and created a delicious balance against the quality tasting pork meat. The pastry was well made and flaky,
My only criticism is that they fell apart a bit when I tried to eat it.

Sainsbury’s Snack Sausage Rolls (270g)

Dainty but divine, these Sainsbury’s sausage rolls were picnic perfect.
They contained 27 per cent British pork, which was more than most, and I liked the seasoning with flavourings of nutmeg and black pepper really elevating the taste.
Not the cheapest supermarket option, but taste wise they really hit the spot.

WINNER! Aldi Crestwood Ready to Eat Sausage Rolls (360g)

Deliciously flaky and crispy, the pastry of these Aldi sausage rolls was a great contrast to the meaty tasting sausage, of which there was a generous 29 per cent.
The pastry was a decent colour and had a lovely flaky texture. Amazing choice for the price, they work out less than 25p each.

Waitrose Summer Sausage Rolls (360g)

Pricey but delicious, I was a big fan of these. Whilst half the size of most, you got more in the pack.
The pastry had a lovely golden colour, which made them look appealing.
So many of the sausage rolls in this test were too pale.
They were well filled with perfectly seasoned sausage meat and incredibly moreish. The only downside is the higher price.”

Pukka Sausage Roll (130g)

- Per sausage roll: 424 calories, 25.6g fat, 2.5g sugar, 2.13g salt
Loved the puff pastry of this sausage roll, which seemed to be seasoned, as well as the meaty filling.
The pork content was 27 per cent, so not bad, and there were lots of spice flavourings coming through including black pepper, nutmeg, sage and ginger.
I didn’t find this one terribly filling given it contains over 400 calories so perhaps best reserved as a treat – but it was tasty, and not too bad value.
