AN interior designer with a portfolio filled with multi-million projects has shared how you can turn your home into a luxury space.
Aside from tricks to elevate your property without breaking the bank, she revealed common decor disasters to avoid.
Antoinette Allande owns the interior design company Antoinette Allande Interiors.
According to her bio, she has worked on large-scale multi-million dollar projects around the country for over a decade.
She suggested a few ways to create the home of your dreams and decorate it like a luxury designer in a blog post.
RUG REASONING
When it comes to rugs, Allande said it’s all about “size and placement” because they should “frame” where they are, like a seating or dining area.
“The bigger the rug the more luxurious the room will look,” she said.
She added that there should at least be a six-inch border unless it’s a wall-to-wall carpet.
WINDOW WAY
Allanda also said you should pay “careful attention” to windows when selecting draper panels.
They should touch the floor for an elevated appearance and recommended store-bought drapes get pressed at the dry cleaners.
LIGHT LESSON
For lighting, Allande said you should “go big or go home.”
She explained that in larger rooms, “small lights are boring and look cheap.”
Light fixtures are what makes a room stand out, according to the expert.
ELEVATE ART
Allande called art a “must” for every room in your home because it takes a room to the “next level in design.”
She said scale should also be taken into consideration because “a tiny piece of art over a large sofa will not look good.”
She suggested another budget-friendly alternative to print and frame your favorite photos in black and white.
Then create a grid or asymmetrical staggered picture wall of different sized frames.
PAINT POWER
Allande emphasized the importance of having the right color scheme in your home.
She recommended selecting furniture first before determining the color scheme so that the paint can match it.
“Purchase paint boards to sample paint and review in different areas of the room to determine if they look good before beginning the paint job,” she advised.
FURNITURE FAN
Furniture size makes a big difference, according to the expert.
The larger the furniture, the more luxurious it looks, so “less is more.”
“In small apartments, large furniture pieces can make a room look more spacious,” she said.
The designer added that a few pieces of “generously sized furniture” are preferred over smaller pieces, but there still has to be about three inches of room in walkways.
MAJOR MISTAKES
FURNITURE AND FABRIC FAILS
Allande revealed furniture and fabric details to be mindful of very transforming any room, especially fabrics that are not cleanable like viscose, for example.
“Furniture from previous homes may not work for your new one,” she said.
She recommended selling them or donating them to a thrift shop.
Also, do not buy everything from one furniture retailer.
“The room will end up looking like a furniture showroom without personality,” she explained.

DESIGN DON’TS
Allande offered ample advise on what not to do when it comes to your home.
She said to take time curating your home’s decor and don’t rush the process.
Right off of that, don’t buy furniture from the same place because you don’t want them to look too similar.
In tune with The Commandments, she said “do not covet thy neighbor’s design style” and instead “make it your own.”
Lastly, don’t take style advise from just anyone because everyone has different opinions.
