Glossier’s original Balm Dot Com is back by popular demand – this is why beauty editors love it
IF there’s one thing that beauty fans live in fear of, it’s make-up brands switching up their formulas.
Whether the reason is cost, quality or longevity, beauty fans don’t like their favourite products messed with, ever. Possibly the biggest culprit of this is Glossier, who infamously tweaked their cult Balm Dot Com formula in 2023.
Glossier Balm Dot Com, £14 from Glossier
The first version of Balm Dot Com arrived on shelves in 2014, and quickly shot to stardom for its hydrating, indulgent formula, and eclectic collection of shades.
I don’t know about you, but I was instantly obsessed.
Spanning flavours like birthday cake, mango and mint, the lip balm became both a handbag staple and a fashion statement.
However, in 2023, Glossier – thoughtfully – tweaked the Bam Dot Com recipe, swapping lanolin (sourced from sheep wool) for a synthetic vegan alternative.
But fans were not happy.
Beauty shoppers, makeup artists and editors alike linked arms and took to social media to convey their disapproval – boycotting the launch.
Whilst Balm Dot Com devotees had no issue with the formula going vegan, they were less amused by the change in texture and finish.
Once indulgent and glossy, Balm Dot Com now had a lightweight, thin and less hydrating formula, which fans simply couldn’t get behind.
However, the launch wasn’t a total flop, as fans enjoyed the new addition of an applicator, which made quick and clean work out of topping up on the go.

Fortunately, Glossier is a brand that listens to the consensus of its customers, regularly taking onboard feedback and critique.
And so, this May, the cult favourite make-up brand announced it was winding back the clock and relaunching the OG formula – lanolin and all.
Starring castor oil, beeswax and lanolin (just like the original) the balm has a hydrating, juicy, luscious formula which needs to be tried to be believed.
Available in nine flavours, beauty shoppers can now get their hands on Balm Dot Com in a variety of shades, including rosy pinks, corals and shimmering golds.
I know I’ll be stocking up on the OG formula (before it inevitably sells out), but I’ll give you a head start – here’s where to buy Glossier Balm Dot Com.
