Luis Suarez was in tears after his penalty-kick miss eliminated Uruguay from Copa America

When the 2019 Copa America quarterfinal between Uruguay and Peru went to penalty kicks, the shooters on both teams were perfect for four rounds — until Luis Suarez.

In the fifth round of penalties, he sent his shot to his left and within the frame, but the ball found Peru’s keeper, Pedro Gallese. No goal. Edison Flores’ penalty kick was the game-winner for Peru. The game went to penalty kicks after the teams played to a 0-0 draw.

Peru will advance to the semifinal against Chile at the Arena do Gremio in Porto Alegre on Wednesday. Uruguay, thanks largely to Suarez, will not.

After the miss, Suarez fell to the field and covered his eyes with his jersey, apparently in tears. A handful of his Uruguayan teammates came to console him despite their elimination. Finally, he returned to his feet and wiped the tears from his eyes.

Coincidentally, this wasn’t Suarez’s only blunder of the game. In the 73rd minute, the striker seemed to have scored the game’s first goal. He put together a gorgeous shot on a cross into the box. Suarez managed to poke the ball out of the air, past Gallese and into the net. But Suarez was flagged offsides and the goal didn’t count.

While the loss was a heart-breaker for Uruguay, that didn’t stop people from dancing on Suarez’s grave. Suarez, after all, is deplored for his antics on the field, including his handball in the 2010 World Cup, his history of biting opponents and his racial abuse of Patrice Evra.
