Hiker found dead in Death Valley National Park

A hiker was found dead near a trail in Death Valley National Park earlier this month and extreme heat appeared to be a factor.

The National Park Service reported Thursday afternoon that the park and the Inyo County Sheriff’s Office received a message around 9 p.m. on Sept. 6 about a potentially deceased hiker near Golden Canyon Trail. A sheriff’s deputy and park rangers launched a search from the Zabriskie Point Trailhead but abandoned efforts around 2 a.m.

The next morning, after consulting the reporting party, the searchers located the victim about 45 yards off the Badlands Loop Trail and approximately a mile from the Zabriskie Point trailhead.

A typical temperature, as displayed in August.

Additional rangers were called to the scene, and the victim was recovered and transferred to the Inyo County Coroner.

On Sept. 6, the day the hiker was on the trails, the recorded high temperature at Furnace Creek was 123 degrees Fahrenheit.

“The cause of death is to be determined by the Inyo County Coroner’s Office, but extreme heat appeared to be a factor,” the park stated.

Even with temperatures below 120 degrees, minor complications can quickly become dangerous in extreme heat, the park warns, adding that park visitors should always closely monitor weather and their own health and limitations.

“Our hearts go out to the victim’s family at this time,” said Death Valley National Park Superintendent Mike Reynolds in a statement. “We also thank the Inyo County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance and professionalism working under these extreme conditions.”

Among the safety tips provided by Death Valley National Park:

Drink plenty of water: Drink at least one gallon (4 liters) of water per day to replace loss from sweat, more if you are active. Be aware of balancing fluid and electrolyte levels.

Avoid hiking in the heat: Do not hike in the low elevations when temperatures are hot. The mountains are cooler in summer, but can have snow and ice in winter.

Travel prepared to survive: Stay on paved roads in summer. If your car breaks down, stay with it until help comes. Carry extra drinking water in your car in case of emergency.

Watch for signs of trouble: If you feel dizzy, nauseous, or a headache, get out of the sun immediately and drink water or sports drinks. Dampen clothing to lower body temperature. Be alert for symptoms in others.
