Photos: Charlo brothers honored in Houston, Jermall's public workout
Houston honored its favorite sons on Wednesday.
Mayor Sylvester Turner presented a special proclamation to the Jermall and Jermell Charlo in front of Toyota Center, where Jermall will defend his middleweight title against Juan Macias Montiel on Saturday.
The twins were born on the outskirts of Houston and have a strong connection to the community.
“Houston is so proud to have the Charlo twins right here in their hometown,” said the mayor, who wore a white shirt and sunglasses in the photos. “This is a proud moment and I’m excited to be here. Saturday night is the big fight and we know Houston is going to be winning that night.
“The Charlo brothers are ambitious and steadfast supporters of their hometown. Together they have formed Lions Only Promotions to help stage their events and help give back to the community here in Houston.”
Said Jermall Charlo: “It’s so meaningful to see the city embrace me today. Now I know that I have to put on a show for the whole city. I’m going to stay locked in so that I can take over this division.”
Also, WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman presented the mayor with a championship belt honoring Juneteenth, which commemorates the end of slavery. The holiday is on June 19, the day of the fight.
