CMPD releases bodycam video in deadly shooting of armed man
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has released body-worn cam footage in connection to a February 2018 shooting where a CMPD officer shot and killed an armed man.
The incident happened Friday, Feb. 2 in the 3200 block of Timberbrook Drive. Officers were called to the home to investigate a suicide attempt just before the officer-involved shooting occurred.
Chief Kerr Putney said the suicidal individual, identified as Charlie Shoupe, was armed with a knife and charged at one of the officers.
Putney said the officer gave loud, repeated verbal commands for Shoupe to drop the weapon and even retreated multiple times to put distance between himself and Shoupe. However, Shoupe continued to charge and the officer fired his gun, striking Shoupe.
Shoupe was taken to Carolinas-Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
