Netanyahu annuls accord with UNHCR on migrants
http://bit.ly/2uNINTa | Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced "the decision to annul" its agreement with UNHCR on African migrants, following the agreement's suspension.
"I listened carefully to the many comments, I reviewed the advantages and the shortcomings, and I decided to annul the agreement," Netanyahu said following a meeting with Israeli Interior Minister Arie Deri.
Netanyahu's decision came after visiting Tuesday the southern neighbourhoods of Tel Aviv, where there is a strong migrant presence.
"Despite the legal limitations and the growing international difficulties, we will continue to act with determination to resort to all the possibilities we have at our disposal to make the infiltrators leave the country," Netanyahu said during Tuesday's meeting.
He said that Israel will "continue to look for other solutions". However, the UN has asked Netanyahu to "reconsider" his decision to cancel the agreement. "We continue to believe in the need for a win-win agreement that can benefit Israel, the international community and the people who need asylum, and we hope that Israel will soon reconsider its decision," a UNHCR spokesperson explained.
