So it resembles those other strange cult or religious rituals where followers also perform various demeaning or degrading tasks in public such as nailing themselves on the cross, self flagellation, piercing body with swords, walking on burning coals, etc etc.. At the same time such PR also serves as SIGINT operation about troops being sufficiently lobotomized turned into ripe low hanging fruitcakes so they can be used for all kinds of crazy "never again" once again things.
So it's not wise practice to single out US military. It's something that is very different from USA military.
