This Modified 2020 Toyota Supra Just Ran a 10-Second Quarter Mile

The Mk4 Supra is a legendary drag racer, with its stout Toyota 2JZ turbocharged inline-six easily able to triple or quadruple its stock power output with the right modifications. Now the Mk5 Supra is here, and while its BMW-sourced B58B30 engine is also a turbocharged six-shooter, it’s somewhat unknown how it will respond to tuning. The team at Real Street Performance is on a mission to find out, experimenting with their white Supra to shave tenths off the 1320. And it looks like they managed to break the 10-second quarter-mile barrier in a Mk5 Supra.

Just barely: It crossed the line in 10.965 seconds at 125.25 mph. That’s a solid improvement over the Supra we tested, which ran the quarter mile in 12.5 seconds at 111.2 mph. From the Christmas tree to the line, Real Street Performance’s driver accomplished a 0.462-second reaction time, 1.544-second 60 foot time, and 7.044 seconds at 99.01 mph in the 1/8 mile. The run was performed in the muggy afternoon air at Orlando Speed World on August 31.

Let’s make it abundantly clear: This is not a stock Supra. Real Street’s modifications so far are a stage 2 ECU tune and downpipe; the turbo itself is stock but the engine slurped race fuel. So built, the inline-six makes 388 hp and 477 lb-ft of torque at the wheels—a whopping increase over the 332 hp and 387 lb-ft we measured on the dyno. For the run it was shod in a pair of super-sticky Hoosier radial tires, and the passenger seat and exhaust were removed to shave about 100 pounds.

Still, it’s an impressive accomplishment. Real Street Performance’s team recalls how long it took to get the Mk4 Supra into the 10’s, and express optimism that the car’s quarter-mile time will drop with further development.
