[Women's Basketball] St. Ambrose unable to dig out of early hole
A slow start proved too much to overcome as St. Ambrose dropped a CCAC contest at Roosevelt 68-49 Saturday afternoon in Chicago.
After a Mercedes Jackson layup tied the game at 2-2 a minute in, the Lakers ran off the next nine points. Roosevelt (3-2, 1-1 CCAC) led the rest of the way.
The Bees hit just 5-of-16 shots in falling behind 24-12 after the first quarter. Things weren't much better in the second as SAU shot 3-of-9 from the floor and committed seven turnovers as the deficit grew to 35-21 at the half.
SAU came alive in the early stages of the second half. Jackson started the third quarter with a jumper in the paint and Reeann McCarty followed with a steal and jumper to pull St. Ambrose to within 10 at 35-25. After a Roosevelt basket, Jackson again scored inside. Charlotte Flynn had a steal leading to a Madi Epperson 3-pointer to trim the margin to 37-30.
A minute later, Jackson knocked down two free throws to put the score at 39-32 with 7:20 left in the third. Then the Bees hit another dry spell.
Over the next five minutes, SAU missed eight straight shots from the floor, misfired on two free throws, and committed a pair of turnovers as Roosevelt went on an 11-0 run to go up 50-32. St. Ambrose got no closer than 13 points in the final period.
