Patti LuPone stopping both at UAlbany, Proctors
Patti LuPone's education in Broadway musicals started with her mother during trips to the grocery store.
"In those days," says LuPone, chatting on the phone last week from a friend's place in New York City, where she was rehearsing the one-woman show she's bringing to Proctors in Schenectady on Friday, "instead of tabloids at the checkout, they had albums." Many, bearing the imprimatur of TV variety-show host Ed Sullivan, were cast recordings of Broadway shows. The price: $1.
"My mother, any time we went, picked one up. 'Kiss Me, Kate,' 'Finian's Rainbow' — it seemed like the whole Broadway canon," says LuPone.
