A’s call up Lou Trivino, place Yusmeiro Petit on bereavement list
The rookie is back for another stint.
The Oakland A’s placed relief pitcher Yusmeiro Petit on the bereavement list Tuesday, the team announced. To replace him on the 25-man roster, rookie reliever Lou Trivino was called up from Triple-A Nashville.
Petit missed several days last week on the family medial emergency list, from April 17-20, but he returned for two games on Sunday and Monday. He will now spend some more time away after the passing of his mother, reports insider Jane Lee. Players on the bereavement list must miss at least three days but can’t be off the roster more than seven days.
In the meantime, Trivino will get another stint in Oakland after making an excellent first impression in his MLB debut last week. The right-hander threw a scoreless inning against the White Sox last Tuesday, then returned the next afternoon for an emergency long relief stint in a 14-inning marathon win. Along the way he showed off his 98 mph fastball, a solid curve and cutter, and enough command of everything to get outs.
Trivino, 2018 MLB: 0.00 ERA, 4 ip, 6 Ks, 2 BB, 0.93 FIP
Trivino, 2018 AAA: 1.69 ERA, 5⅓ ip, 10 Ks, 1 BB, 0.73 FIP
We’ll have to wait and see whether this turns out to be another quick cup of coffee or the beginning of a longer stint. One way or other the 24-year-old is one of the organization’s top relief prospects, and figures to see plenty of time with the big league club this year. Oakland’s bullpen now looks like this:
- Blake Treinen (R)
- Ryan Buchter (L)
- Ryan Dull (R)
- Emilio Pagan (R)
- Lou Trivino (R)
- Chris Bassitt (R)
- Santiago Casilla (R)
- Chris Hatcher (R)
One more piece of injury news: Reliever Liam Hendriks, on the DL with a groin injury, “had [a] cyst removed from his hip and a PRP injection,” reports Susan Slusser of the S.F. Chronicle.
Welcome back to Oakland, Lou! All the best to the Petit family!
Melvin says Yusmeiro Petit’s mother died before yesterday’s game and Petit still wanted to pitch. Melvin was very impressed with him doing so, especially when he then got hit and stayed in the game. The whole team saddened by Petit’s loss.

Melvin says Petit’s mother passed away before the game yesterday but he insisted on pitching. Flew to Venezuela this morning to be with family.
