LIFE expectancy in America declined for the second year running in 2016 according to data recently released by the Centers for Disease control and Prevention (CDC). Unsurprisingly, major cause was the opioid epidemic. The CDC reported that deaths from drug overdoses rose from 16,848 in 1999 to 63,632 in 2016. The increase was particularly steep among those aged 55 to 64, for whom death rates increased six-fold over that period. A man who attempted to force himself upon a masseuse at a Sliema Chinese massage parlour, has been remanded in custody. Hussein Abudullahi Jama, a 22-year old Somali, had entered the parlour in Manuel Dimech Street on January 14 and handed over €40 for a massage. INTERNATIONAL - US president Donald Trump will deliver his first State of the Union address tomorrow, an hour-long speech to Congress and the nation with the theme: “Building a safe, strong and proud America.”

Trump’s speech comes on the back of a three-day government shutdown, and ahead of a February 8 deadline for deeply divided Republicans and Democrats to agree on how to fund the government and overhaul immigration laws.

Later today, Major League Baseball and the Cleveland Indians will announce that they are eliminating the Chief Wahoo logo from caps and uniforms—starting in the 2019 season. What a weekend it was.

Indian Premier League Cricket wrapped up the wildest free agency in professional sports with the conclusion of the two-day IPL Auction. It was an event where almost every player in the league was a free agent, and up for sale to the highest bidder at once.

It was the confluence of the real world and fantasy sports running together in a wholly surreal way. The IPL’s 10-year cycle allowed this to happen, and the weekend promised a lot of very weird things. Thankfully we were not denied. Читать дальше...
